Since the fall of 2009, there has been a reconnaissance count at or near the Steeples Ridge which is located on the east side of the Kootenay Valley (Rocky Mountain Trench) 25 km NE of Cranbrook, B.C.

Temperature:

From +10C to +18C in mid afternoon to +12 at 18:30 hrs.

Description of the Day:

Very warm day for October with clear sky for most of the day. Afternoon Ground wind was gusting from SW to 28 km/hr.
Ridge wind on Nakiska was from SSW gusting up to 103 km at 10:00 hrs to 69 km at 15:00 hrs.
Most eagles flew between 10-12:00 hrs. Last eagle observed at 13:22 hrs. No migrating raptor observed after 14:38 hrs.

Migrant Golden Eagle Count:

10 eagles = 2 adults, I juvenile and 7 unaged.

Migrant Other Raptor Count By Species:

Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 unaged, Rough-legged Hawk - 3 unaged.

Period with Most Migrants:

Between 10-11:00 hrs with 6 Golden Eagles.

Total Migratory Raptors:

14

Non-Migrant Raptors:

Northern Goshawk - 1 adult

Other Birds of Note:

American Tree Sparrow, Belted Kingfisher, Golden-crowned Kinglet, White-crowned Sparrow.
