Spring count results
Here we present the data that we have collected over the years. The current season data is usually updated daily, but may only reflect accurate data up to the previous day. This data only goes back as far as we have data in an online database; previous data exists only on paper, to be input eventually (things move slowly in the world of volunteers).
Fall count results
This chart shows the decline in the number of Golden Eagles recorded at the Mt Lorette site in the fall since 1993. In 1997 the count was conducted at Plateau Mountain. Only a few days were counted in 2002, and in 2006, 2007, and 2008, the main count was held at the South Livingstone site in Crowsnest Pass, with only a short count at Mt Lorette. Data prior to 2010 has not been verified.
Since 2010 the decline in numbers has levelled off, as shown in this chart:
However, the trend still indicates a decline in numbers.
The peak of the fall migration occurs between Oct 5 and Oct 15, as can be seen in this chart of average daily numbers through the season:
On a day with suitable migration conditions (moderate southwest winds and no precipitation) we can expect to see over 100 Golden Eagles fly by us each day during this peak.
The distribution of the numbers throughout the day is not even, as can be seen in the chart below of hourly numbers. Note that these represent averages over many days and many years, and on any particular day the distribution can be quite different. For example, if a cold front is approaching with snow or rain predicted for the afternoon, more eagles can be seen in the morning. However, in general, the best time to view the eagles is in the mid-afternoon.
