Since the fall of 2009, there has been a reconnaissance count at or near the Steeples Ridge which is located on the east side of the Kootenay Valley (Rocky Mountain Trench) 25 km NE of Cranbrook, B.C.

Description of the Day:

Nice sunny day. The ground winds were mainly light from W/NW. Ridge winds moderate from the SW. 30% to 60% cirrus and cumulus clouds
A nice variety of raptors were seen today, most birds flew high over the Fisher Range which made identification of some smaller raptors quite challenging.

Migrant Golden Eagle Count:

31 (19 adults, 12 indeterminate)

Migrant Other Raptor Count By Species:

1 Bald Eagle, 4 Sharp shinned Hawk, 5 Coopers Hawk, 4 Northern Goshawk, 6 Red tailed Hawk, 2 Merlin, 2 Peregrine Falcon, 4 Unidentified small falcons.

Period with Most Migrants:

11 migrants betweeb 15:00 and 16:00

Total Migratory Raptors:

59

Non-Migrant Raptors:

1 Northern Goshawk, 1 Golden Eagle

Other Birds of Note:

2 Dark-eyed Junco, , 15 Pine Siskin, 1 Townsends Solitaire, 1 Common Loon, 1 American Dippers, 35 Ravens, 1 Northern Flicker, 1 Downy Woodpecker, 1 Red breasted Nuthatch, 3 Black capped Chickadee, American Robin 100+.
