4 people stopped by the site to ask about eagles.
Weather:
The temperature at 0745 was -13C, the high was 6C and it was 2C at 2000. Ground winds were calm to light all day, between SE and SW. Ridge winds were difficult to estimate but seemed to be light from a southerly direction. The day was cloudless with excellent visibility.
Raptor Observations:
The days first Golden Eagles were seen just before 10:00 soaring at Mt.Lorette. Subsequent movement through the rest of the morning until late afternoon was a little slow and sporadic with birds using a variety of different flight paths on both sides of the valley. Flying conditions appeared good and there was quite a lot of high soaring. Numbers increased from late afternoon and these birds were soaring and gliding high above the east ridge before gliding on towards to Mt.Lorette. Almost half (49) the days total number of Golden Eagles were seen between 17:00 and 19:00. A total of 108 birds of 3 species were counted that comprised 2 adult Bald Eagles, 5 Northern Goshawk (2a, 3u), 101 Golden Eagles (84a, 1sa, 16u). Resident Northern Goshawk was seen displaying on several occasions.
Non-raptor Observations:
24 Canada Geese, 14 Snow Geese, 2 Downy Woodpeckers, 2 Hairy Woodpeckers, 3 Canada Jays, 1 Black-billed Magpie, 18 Common Ravens, 5 Black-capped Chickadees, 5 Mountain Chickadees, 12 European Starlings, 2 American Robins, 1 Dark-eyed Junco.

It was a quiet day for visitors. Nearly all the passers-by stopped to chat – a total of 11.
Weather:
Around 2pm we experienced a rather unusual event – a mini tornado. First we heard a rumbling, cracking noise from the other side of the river. Looking in that direction, we expected to see ice crumbling into the river due to melt as it was quite warm. Instead we saw the wind drilling into the ice on the gravel bank, causing pieces of ice to fly up in circles. A few seconds later we were hit by a massive gust of wind that knocked the chairs over – fortunately we were able to grab the scopes before those toppled too. The tornado lasted maybe a minute before the wind dissipated, and it went back to being a mild, sunny day.
The temperature started at -14C, rose to +5C in the late afternoon, and had dropped back to 0C by the time we left. There were no clouds at all, so it was difficult to judge winds. At ground level there was not much wind, other than the twister, until late in the day when there was a continuous strong breeze from the north. The weather station on Centennial Ridge indicated very low winds most of the day, picking up towards the end of the day, with the direction ranging from northwest to northeast.
Raptor Observations:
In spite of the low wind, there was a constant stream of eagles, starting around 1100 and continuing until 1900. The first couple were seen at Mt Lorette, but, until late afternoon, most were seen on the west ridge. Most of these appeared over the left slope of Olympic, rose in thermals, then glided off to the northwest. Around 1700 the movement abruptly switched to the east ridge, with the eagles skimming the top of the ridge and soaring a little to gain enough altitude to make it to Mt Lorette, where they soared again.
The resident Golden Eagle was seen hunting over Hummingbird Plume, and there were two appearances of an adult Northern Goshawk flying low across the meadow. One immature Northern Goshawk was intercepted by a second one that appeared to be chasing it out of the area.
The end tally for migrants was 51 Golden Eagles (49a, 1sa, 1u), one adult Bald Eagle, and one immature Northern Goshawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
The only non-raptor migrants were three European Starlings. Other than a brief squabble between three Hairy Woodpeckers, there was not much going on in the bird world. Other birds were: Common Raven 8, Black-capped Chickadee 4, Boreal Chickadee 1, Pine Siskin 12

A very special thank you to Yumiko Hiraki who came to help out while practicing with her new birding scope, and to Glenn Webber for spending many hours helping us. Twelve people stopped by to inquire about our activities.
Weather:
Temperature low -11C, high 3.5 C. There was no wind at the start of the count and when it did pick up it was coming from the NNE (both ground and ridge winds), which may have been one of the reasons that there were fewer migrants today. Gusts in the afternoon reached up to about 20 km/h. Early in the morning, there was 50% coverage by cirrus clouds which gradually transformed to 10% cumulous I want to share a fascinating thing that I saw today for the first time in my life. I noticed that there were small cumulous clouds concentrating in the area of Mt Collembola and the wind was coming from the NNE but there were no clouds near Mt. Lorette. The small clouds grew much larger as they traveled westward. I decided to look just east of the last cloud and I found the exact spot where the clouds were forming one after another at intervals as though they were being let through a tear in the sky.
Raptor Observations:
A Northern Goshawk called out from the forest at the crack of dawn and one was later seen hunting near the base of Collembola. A resident golden eagle displaying at the Olympic summit was the first eagle of the day. Oddly, todayâs migration took place almost entirely over the western ridges (gliding and soaring) with a few exceptions at Lorette and two three birds that flew by Mt. Patrick. There was mist or fog in the air which made location and identification difficult. Many birds would just disappear into the thick air. The first Merlin of the season appeared at Patrick and flew like a bat out of h* to McGillivray. Golden Eagles 23a, 1j, 9u, Bald Eagles 3a, 1j, Unidentified Eagle 1, Merlin 1
Non-raptor Observations:
It was very quiet at the meadow today. We only saw 8 Ravens, 1 Black-capped Chickadee, 1 Canada Goose, 1 Dark-eyed Junco, and 4 Red Squirrels.

We were graced with 7 people throughout the day who helped spot raptors; 40 others stopped to chat about the eagle migration (Hi Mel, come again next week!).
Weather:
The temperature ranged from -6 in the morning to 4 C in the afternoon, falling to 1 C by the end of the day. Morning winds were light and from SSW; after 1 pm the wind became variable and shifted back and forth from SW to NE for a few hours, finally settling in from the NE for the remainder of the day. Skies were predominantly clear with a few hours of scattered cumulus clouds after mid-day. With the clear skies, low winds, and mild air temperature we were delighted to find ourselves overdressed for the middle part of the day.
Raptor Observations:
We had an early rush of Golden Eagles in the morning, with three in the 10am hour and 22 between 11am and noon. All the eagles spotted before 1pm (33 adult Goldens) appeared over Mt. Bogart before catching thermals on the back side of Olympic Summit and continuing north. After 1 pm, the action switched to the eastern side of the valley with the exception of one Golden Eagle observed using the flight path from the morning.
Migrating Raptors: 42 Golden Eagles (40a, 2u); 4 Bald Eagles (3a, 1us).
Non-migrating Raptors: The resident Northern Goshawk pair performed aerial manoeuvres over the eastern valley in the early afternoon.
Non-raptor Observations:
A number of migrating American Robins flew over the site throughout the day; a Varied Thrush flew south. The displaying Northern Goshawks were a highlight.

46 visitors stopped to talk. Seven stayed for a while and watched migration.
Weather:
In the morning the sky was clear, the wind was light and the low was -8C. Clouds increased in the afternoon leaving 70-80% cirrus overhead until the end of the day. The high was 4C, which felt tropical compared to the sub-zero temperatures we experienced in the first half of March. Wind gusts reached 20 km/h from the SW in the afternoon. Ridge winds were also SW, light to moderate in the morning and probably strong in the afternoon. Conditions for spotting and ageing were usually good.
Raptor Observations:
Migration started a little slow with a few eagles per hour trickling through in the late morning and afternoon, giving us a count of 15 Golden Eagles by 3 pm. After 4 pm a good late day rush brought and additional 30 migrants. All but one used the eastern ridges. Their height was variable but they tended to be high more than low. The total was 41 Golden Eagles (34a, 1 sa, 6u) and 4 Bad Eagles (2a, 1sa, 1j). Local raptors included an adult Bald Eagle flying south along the Fisher Range, an unaged Golden Eagle that was flying around near Mt. Lorette but didn’t seem to be going north, and an immature Northern Goshawk flying above the east side of the valley.
Non-raptor Observations:
Common Goldeneye 2 Pair flying along the river Killdeer 1 Flying along the river. Probably disappointed by the lack of open shore (still covered in deep ice & snow) Great Horned Owl 1 Heard while walking out in the evening Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 1 Canada Jay 2 Common Raven 8 Black-capped Chickadee 4 Mountain Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 4 Brown Creeper 1 European Starling 2 American Robin 1 Pine Grosbeak 1 Pine Siskin 3 Dark-eyed Junco 2
