Visitors:
The beautiful fall weather brought at least 40 visitors the meadow
Weather:
Most of the day was fairly sunny with sparse cloud and light to moderate wind. Late in the afternoon the wind picked up and cloud cover increased. That resulted in some high-flying, silhouetted migrants that were difficult to age. It was chilly in the morning at 1C but quickly warmed to a balmy 19C by the middle of the day.
Raptor Observations:
Most migrants used the eastern ridges though some hawks flew down the valley or used the western ridges. Elevation was quite variable though they tended to be high later in the day. Non-migrants included two Northern Goshawks who were harassing a migrating Red-tail over Hummingbird Plume Hill.
Non-raptor Observations:
20 Canada Geese, 1 Common Merganser, 2 Common Loons, 1 drumming Ruffed Grouse, 1 Belted Kingfisher, 1 Northern Flicker, 1 Black-billed Magpie, 7 Common Ravens, 2 Canada Jays, 2 Black-capped Chickadees, 4 Mountain Chickadees, 2 Boreal Chickadees, 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 5 Red-breasted Nuthatches, 2 American Dippers, 1 Varied Thrush, 150 American Robins, 1 American Pipit, 1 Dark-eyed Junco, 1 Lincoln’s Sparrow and 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers. Mourning cloak butterflies were on the wing

20: The site was graced with many interested and enthusiastic visitors today, including a few eagle-eyed kids.
Weather:
From +6C at dawn, the temperature steadily increased to a high of +17C by 5:00pm. A gorgeous day of clear skies and light winds made for rather poor raptor migration and spotting conditions.
Raptor Observations:
The first raptor of the day was a Golden Eagle of undetermined age at 10:00am. Raptors continued in a slow trickle of roughly two per hour until supper time, with a small burst before sunset. The resident Northern Goshawk made a few appearances; a Sharp-shinned Hawk was observed lurking low in the forest near sunset.
16 migrating raptors were observed: 11 Golden Eagles (6 adult, 4 subadult, 1 unaged); 2 Bald Eagles (2 adult); 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk (1 adult); 2 unidentified eagles.
Non-raptor Observations:
Other birds: 1 Belted Kingfisher, 1 Hairy Woodpecker, 2 Clarkâs Nutcracker, 15 Common Raven, 2 Mountain Chickadee, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch, 1 American Dipper, 120 American Robin, 1 American Pipit, 1 Dark-eyed Junco, 2 White-throated Sparrow.
Tom, the resident American Dipper, made a last-minute cameo as the sun set.

Weather:
-3 C to +12 C. 90-100 % altostratus to 14:00, then 90-100 % altocumulus. Ground winds mostly south 2 to 10 km/h, occasional gusts to 20 km/h. Ridge winds SW to WSW 30 to 60 km/h. Some negligible precipitation around 18:00.
Raptor Observations:
The cloud background made aging difficult, and many eagles were aged when they passed in front of rock for a dark background. 50 migrant raptors consisting of 1 unaged Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 unaged Cooper’s Hawks, and 47 Golden Eagles (22a, 7j, 18u). Also one non-migrant Osprey flying north with a fish, and one non-migrant adult Golden Eagle flying north.
Non-raptor Observations:
American Dipper 1, American Robin 40, Belted Kingfisher 1, Northern Flicker 2, Common Merganser 3.
Interesting observation: a “dogfight” between a raven and a juvenile Golden Eagle that continued non-stop for several minutes from Patrick all the way to Mt. McDougall, with the raven sometimes on the attack and and even making contact, and the eagle sometimes wildly chasing the raven, with the raven staying 20 to 50 cm ahead of the eagle (estimate based on the size of the raven). In front of McDougall, the eagle finally put on a burst of speed and left the raven behind.

We were treated to 14 visitors, including Ian and Jim (both long-time associates of the count), who both stayed a while and helped spot.
Weather:
Though somewhat frosty in the morning, actual temperatures were quite nice, ranging from 0 to 18 degrees Celsius throughout the day. Periods of heavy cloud cover to the south threatened rain, but fortunately that never materialized. Winds were on the low end, even at ridge level.
Raptor Observations:
An excellent day for this early in the count, with 18 migrant Golden Eagles, 9 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 3 migrant and 1 resident Goshawks, 2 Cooper’s Hawks, 2 Red-tailed Hawks, and one a piece of Merlin, Bald Eagle, and Northern Harrier. 2 birds were not identified to species level, in both cases because they disappeared behind the mountains within seconds of being spotted. In the morning through the early afternoon, most raptor traffic was split between the two ridgelines, but by mid-afternoon all our birds were going almost straight overhead.
Non-raptor Observations:
Tom (the resident American Dipper) serenaded observers for much of the morning and late evening, while a male Belted Kingfisher, some Common Mergansers, and around 100 migrating Robins were the other noteworthy sightings. A single Ruffed Grouse joined today’s observers in refuting the onset of fall, as it drummed away happily in the forest to the south of the site.

The day’s count of 25 raptors comprised 1 adult Bald Eagle, 3 Sharp-shinned Hawks (1j 2u), 1 adult Cooper’s Hawk, 1 unaged Norther Goshawk, 3 Broad-winged Hawks (2a 1j), 13 Golden Eagles (8a, 1sa, 4j), 1 adult Peregrine Falcon, 1 Prairie Falcon, and one unidentified small raptor.
Non-raptor Observations:
7 Common Mergansers, 1 Belted Kingfisher, 2 Barn Swallows, 11 American Robins, 2 Mountain Chickadees, 1 Canada Jay, 1 Black-billed Magpie, 5 Common Ravens, and 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler.
