Weather:
At sunrise in the Kananaskis Valley snow was falling and low cloud obscured all mountain ridges. The start of the count was delayed until 8:30 am when blue sky appeared and the eastern ridges partially cleared. Light snow continued to fall throughout the count, and unfortunately the clearing didn’t last long. Around 10:30 am the sky began to close in again, and by 2 pm the count was abandoned as low cloud returned bringing heavier snow. Wind was 10-20 km/h from the NE-NNE at ground and ridge level. If the snow wasn’t enough temperature between -12 and -13 C really made it feel like winter.

Raptor Observations:
The count consisted of a single hardy Golden Eagle seen over the Fisher Range around noon.

Non-raptor Observations:
74 Canada Geese flying south 1 Black-billed Magpie 4 Common Ravens 1 Mountain Chickadee 2 chickadee sp. 5 Golden-crowned Kinglets 1 American Dipper 1 Lapland Longspur 4 Dark-eyed Juncos

Visitors:
A family of five from Ontario was looking for Troll Falls. We helped them find the route, and they learned a bit about the count in the process.

Weather:
We tried. Between one dump of about 6cm of snow and before the next snowfall was to arrive, there appeared to be a period of clearer weather this morning. Sure enough, on arrival at the count site the east ridge was clear. But not for long. For a while all the peaks kept disappearing and appearing again, but soon everything closed in, snow started falling, and we gave up.

Raptor Observations:
One Bald Eagle was seen, but it was flying north down the river.

Non-raptor Observations:
Besides the eagle, there were a couple of ravens flying around, two American Dippers on the river, and a mixed flock of chickadees on the trail as we left.

Weather:
Temperature 0 – 2 degC. Mostly overcast with alto stratus and cumulus but some sun in the afternoon. Observing conditions were quite good. Ground winds low to moderate SW. Ridge winds moderate to strong S and SW. Heavy snow laden clouds approached from the west late afternoon and the count was ended a little early at 17:15.

Raptor Observations:
Migrant eagles were usually seen gliding from Mt Lorette towards the Fisher Range. Glide speeds were noticeably slow due to strong headwinds and many birds lost a lot of altitude during the glide across the river valley. They had no trouble regaining altitude once the eastern ridges were reached. Tally was 22 Golden Eagles (11a, 2juv, 9u), 1 sa Bald Eagle, 2 Rough-legged Hawks.

Non-raptor Observations:
Canada Jay 2, Black-billed Magpie 1, Common Raven 16, Black-capped Chickadee 5, Bohemian Waxwing 20, American Dipper 1, Common Merganser 9.

Visitors:
One visitor came with binoculars to watch migration. Six others stopped to talk

Weather:
It was a windy day at ridge level with gusts exceeding 70 km/h. At ground level the wind was moderate, typically around 10 km/h with gusts up to 20. Cloud cover was low in the morning, around 20% which made spotting high-flying birds difficult. In the afternoon cloud cover increased to 60-80% which helped spotting. Temperature was a chilly -8 C in the morning which increased to -2 C in the afternoon. 20-30 cm of snow had fallen in the last couple days.

Raptor Observations:
Most of the migrants were flying high over the eastern ridges, kiting into the strong updrafts then gliding south well above the Fisher Range. Some birds were high enough to detach from the ridges and flew down the east side of the valley. Others seemed to have trouble maintaining height and came low in front of Mt. Patrick before finding another updraft and kiting high again.
The total count consisted of 49 Golden Eagles (27 adults, 4 sub-adults, 1 juvenile, 2 undifferentiated immature and 15 unaged), 6 Bald Eagles (3 adults & 3 sub-adults), 1 adult Northern Goshawk and 2 unidentified eagles. Local raptors included an adult Bald Eagle that was once again flying low over the river in the morning and an adult Northern Goshawk flying west to the south of the site.

Non-raptor Observations:
Common Merganser 11 One on the river, ten flying south Belted Kingfisher 1 Canada Jay 2 Common Raven 10 Golden-crowned Kinglet 3 Brown Creeper 1 American Dipper 1 European Starling 8 Seven flying south and one hanging around Bohemian Waxwing 25 Red Crossbill 8 Dark-eyed Junco 2
