Visitors:
About 60 people came by the site today, and so many were interested and eager to ask questions. I kept hearing comments about how important and meaningful it was to be here and experience the count firsthand. A special shout-out to Yumi, who spent a few fruitful hours observing with us. We also had a special visitor from Wales, John Trudgill, who has devoted his entire life to working with raptors. It was wonderful to share the site with so many curious and enthusiastic visitors!
Weather:
It was a nice day! Temperatures ranged from 4C to 9C, ending at 8C. SW ground winds were very light, averaging approximately 6 km/h, before increasing between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. SW ridge winds were initially light but strengthened after 1:00 p.m., reaching 2233 km/h with gusts up to 46 km/h. The ridges remained clear throughout the day. Cloud cover ranged from 80100%, with a variety of cirrus and stratus clouds and some lenticular clouds developing later in the day.
Raptor Observations:
The first Golden appeared around 8:30, gliding low along and in front of the east ridges. Most of the birds flew low, and many crossed the face of the mountains at some point, making identification an easier task. We had the highest numbers after 2:30. The final count for Raptors was 74 Golden Eagles (50 adults, 7 subadults, 5 juveniles, 3 non-adults, 9 unidentified). 3 adult Bald Eagles, 1 Red-tailed Hawk, 1 Rough-legged Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
1 Three-toed Woodpecker, 1 Mountain Chickadee, 65 American Robins in 2 flocks, A choir of 7 Common Ravens plus many more, 1 Hairy Woodpecker, 16 Common Loons including a flock of 12, 4 Canada Jays, 15 Snow Buntings, 1 Pine Siskin, 25 Bohemian Waxwings, 1 Ruffed Grouse, and 1 Black-capped Chickadee.
