Visitors:
Quite a few people walked by, but only about 10 stopped to chat.

Weather:
The temperature started out at a chilly -3C, but rose to 8C by noon and stayed there for the rest of the day. The wind was non-existent to light from a westerly direction at all levels until the end of the day, when the wind switched to coming from the NE at both ground and ridge level. Although gusts were measured up to 25kph at ground level, at ridge level the wind never registered above 17kph. Cumulus clouds gradually built up throughout the day, obscuring parts of the ridges at times and sprinkling some rain. The count was terminated slightly early when the east ridge became obscured by low clouds and rain/snow.

Raptor Observations:
A rush of 10 Golden Eagles between noon and 1pm gave optimism for a day with high numbers, but it was not to be. The flight slowed down to a trickle, with a total of only 19 for the day (11a, 1sa, 1ui, 6u). Accipiters were plentiful, again, but only two flew low enough to be positively identified as adult Sharp-shinned Hawks. The remaining 7 unidentified accipiters were likely Sharp-shinned Hawks, as Cooper’s Hawks are quite rare in the mountains. The only other migrant was a buteo that was not possible to ID to species.
Only one non-migrant raptor was spotted. A juvenile American Goshawk sat in a tree by the river for a while, then took off into the forest as if it had seen something. This is likely the offspring of the local breeding pair.

Non-raptor Observations:
There has been a noticeable decrease in the number of migrating song birds, but there are still a few lingering, and several residents put in an appearance today. Hairy Woodpecker 1, Canada Jay 2, Black-billed Magpie 1, Common Raven 15, Black-capped Chickadee 1, Mountain Chickadee 1, Boreal Chickadee 2, Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2, Golden-crowned Kinglet 4, Red-breasted Nuthatch 4, American Dipper 1, American Robin 1, Bohemian Waxwing 10, American Pipit 1, White-crowned Sparrow 1, Yellow-rumped Warbler 1

Predictions:
Tomorrow’s weather does not look favourable for migration. Snow and/or rain all day, 100% cloud cover, wind from the northeast.

About 15 people stopped to chat.

Weather:
The temperature was surprisingly warm at the start of the day, 12C, and stayed in a narrow range, going up to 15C and ending at 13C. The weather, though, was all over the place, with cloud cover coming and going, and rain (mostly over the west ridge), sprinkling us every now and then. The day started out with dark clouds on the east ridge. By mid-day there was rain to the south and west, and at the end of the day the rain had shifted to the north and west and was closing in. Mount Lorette was occasionally shrouded in clouds, while the rest of the Fisher Range remained clear. The west ridge was mostly clear until afternoon, when it disappeared in mist. A strong wind was blowing all day both at ground level and at ridge level. Initially the wind was from the south but it gradually shifted around more to the west.

Raptor Observations:
Until the clouds closed in late in the day, conditions were perfect for migrating raptors. However, not that many were taking advantage of it – on the other hand, it is early in the season still. Like yesterday, there was more movement in the morning than in the afternoon. All 24 migrant Golden Eagles (11a, 2ui, 11u) were seen gliding over the east ridge. The lighting conditions, particularly in the morning, plus the strong wind that allowed them to glide with folded wings and tail, made it difficult to age them. There was a good flight of accipiters, some flying high over the east ridge and impossible to ID to species, and 6 that were flying over the east valley and were ID’d as Sharp-shinned Hawks. There was one adult Broad-winged Hawk, two adult Red-tailed Hawks, and one unidentified buteo.
There were quite a few birds that were apparently not migrating – one adult Golden Eagle, two adult Bald Eagles, two adult Red-tailed Hawks (one light calurus and one intermediate calurus), and one adult American Goshawk.

Non-raptor Observations:
Unlike recent days, there were no flocks of migrating song birds, other than one small flock of what were probably starlings. The ravens were entertaining to watch. Frequently they would be chasing after the migrants – several of the accipiters flying along the ridge were discovered by checking out the raven activity. Other birds were: Ruffed Grouse 1, Black-billed Magpie 2, Common Raven 12, Black-capped Chickadee 2, Mountain Chickadee 2, Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1, American Robin 2, Bohemian Waxwing 4, Red Crossbill 1, Pine Siskin 1,

Weather:
The start temperature was 6C, with gloomy stratus and cumulus clouds covering the sky and no ground wind. Ridge winds were mostly from the southwest and moderate during the morning.
The afternoon started with little cloud cover ~15%. That varied for the first part of the afternoon, before increasing throughout the balance of the day to approximately 90%.

Raptor Observations:
The dark sky in the morning meant aging the eagles challenging. There was a reasonably steady progression of them, initially gliding just above the east ridge, but as the morning wore on, they were using more powered flight and flying lower.
With low clouds above Patrick and the Fisher range in the later afternoon, spotting and aging eagles became more difficult.
The count included 20 Golden Eagles (12a, 1j, 1sa, 2ui, 4u).
Through the course of the day, one adult Bald Eagle was spotted.
In addition, one American Goshawk and one female Northern Harrier was seen.

Non-raptor Observations:
1 Pileated Woodpecker, 1 Blue Jay, 11 Common Raven, 2 Mountain Chickadee, 1 Boreal Chickadee, 1 American Dipper, 32 American Robin, 50 Bohemian Waxwing, 23 White-winged Crosbill.
