Weather:
It was a very pleasant day with the temperature rising to 5C from a low of -7C. Ground winds were variable, calm in the morning and gradually increasing to a gentle breeze in the afternoon, and ridge winds were initially light SW increasing to moderate SW with gusts of 50km/h from 1700. Early cloud cover was 50% altostratus and cirrostratus; the clouds quickly dissipated becoming clear skies by noon.
Raptor Observations:
The first 2 Golden Eagles did not appear until 1320, struggling to gain lift below Mt Lorette before flapping and gliding their way across the river valley to the Fisher Range. Flying conditions improved through the afternoon with most of the eagles soaring and gliding just above ridge level. All eagles were observed using the eastern ridges, mostly Mt. Lorette to the Fisher Range, until late afternoon. 11 of the 15 eagles seen from 1700 were first spotted soaring near the summit of Mt McDougall, suggesting that they had approached the Fisher Range from the north east – not the first time this has happened this season. A total of 40 migrants of 4 species were seen between 1230 and 1805 comprising 1 very late season Osprey, 1 juv American Goshawk, 1 dark morph Rough-legged Hawk and 37 Golden Eagles (22a, 1sa, 2ui, 12u). The only non-migrant seen was 1 adult Bald Eagle.
Non-raptor Observations:
A decent variety of smaller birds kept us occupied before the raptors started flying. 3 Mallards, 3 Common Mergansers, 1 Ruffed Grouse, 1 Northern Pygmy Owl, 1 Belted Kingfisher, 1 American Three-toed Woodpecker, 1 Downy Woodpecker, 1 Hairy Woodpecker, 3 Canada Jays, 1 Black-billed Magpie, 2 Clark’s Nutcrackers, 9 Common Ravens, 2 Black-capped Chickadees, 1 American Dipper, 1 European Starling, 1 Townsend’s Solitaire, 12 Bohemian Waxwings, 6 Evening Grosbeaks and 4 White-winged Crossbills.
