Weather:
The temperature at 0830 was -15C, the high at 15:00 was -4C. Winds were ENE-NE all day 10-20 km/h with occasional gusts to 30 km/h. Cloud cover varied from 10% to 60% cirrus and cirrostratus with occasional light snow flurries to 100% stratus with light-moderate snow from 13:00 to 15:00 that largely obscured the ridges. Much heavier, darker clouds lurked to the south and west for much of the day. There had been several cm of fresh snow overnight. The count was terminated at 16:45 due to a lack of migrants and worsening weather.
Raptor Observations:
The count was 5 Golden Eagles (4 adults, 1 sub adult) seen between 11:10 and 12:20. All birds were flying above the east ridges before flapping and gliding across the valley. A resident American Goshawk gave us a nice display flight.
Non-raptor Observations:
The cold NE winds kept bird activity very low. 1 Hairy Woodpecker, 5 Common Ravens, 1 Black- billed Magpie, 1 American Dipper, 1 American Robin.

Four visitors came by and chatted briefly.
Weather:
Upon arrival at Hay Meadows, the heavy snowfall and the fact that not a mountain was in sight, delayed the count start till 11:00AM, when the snowfall had lessened. The starting temperature was minus 1 went up as high as plus 2 and back down to plus 1 at 15:00.The western ridges were obscured completely for most of the day, the eastern ridges cleared for a short time in the early after noon. The cloud was low most of the day with a veiled sun and blue tinged sky showing around 13:00. It was impossible to see the ridge winds and high winds till later in the day when the winds switched from South west to North east. Ground winds were light mostly from the North. By 15:00 the sky was completely socked in and the snow fall once again became moderately heavy.
Raptor Observations:
Only one Golden eagle was seen flying over the big smile on Patrick
Non-raptor Observations:
6 young Mountain Sheep rams were seen on top of Mt Fisher until the clouds blotted them from view.

Eight people stopped by to chat about the count.
Weather:
The start of the count was delayed until 11 am due to poor visibility at the site. The temperature at 11 am was 0°C, rose to 7°C by 4 pm, and fell to 4°C by the end of the count. Arrival at the parking lot at 9 am was met with all ridges fully obscured and the southern portion of the valley fully ensconced in cloud. Ridges cleared during the 11 oâclock hour. McDougall remained intermittently obscured until after noon. The afternoon presented some of the best observation and migration conditions this observer has ever encountered. The eagles did not agree. Winds increased throughout the day from negligible in the morning to moderate from the SW at ridge level in the afternoon. Ground winds shifted from the SW to the NE at seemingly random intervals. Light flurries gave way to partial cumulus cloud cover, which would have been excellent for locating and identifying raptors if they had not been so high, fast, and tucked up to glide.
Raptor Observations:
Migrant Eagles Ten golden Eagles were observed migrating north today. The first appeared just after 11 am crossing overhead from the west toward Patrick, then proceeded north to Lorette; it was relatively low and used powered flight for the entirely of its progression. Two more eagles were observed flying from Patrick to Lorette during the 12 pm hour. The final seven migrants of the day were not spotted until after 4 pm. They were all observed flying increasingly higher and faster leaving Patrick. Aging was made difficult by the speed, trajectory, and body position of the birds. 10 Golden Eagles: 3a, 7u
No other raptors were observed.
Non-raptor Observations:
A group of 5 White-tailed Deer ambled across the river downstream of the site a few times throughout the day and were also encountered on the walk out. Three deer also loped across the meadow in the afternoon. Ten Mountain Goats were observed along the south ridge of Olympic Summit in the morning. An indeterminate number of Red Squirrels chattered from the surrounding forest.
Three Common Ravens and two Black-capped Chickadees were also observed at the site.
A small flock of finches/buntings flew overhead in the afternoon; they declined to be identified more specifically.

Only five people stopped to ask about the count. Thanks to Jim for staying for a few hours and helping to spot, and to Ed for keeping us company during the waning hours of the day.
Weather:
In terms of clouds and temperature, it was a fairly typical day at the site. The temperature started out at -2C, rose all the way to +3C, and was 0C at the end. It started out mostly sunny with a few cumulus clouds, and as the day wore on, the cumulus clouds increased, and stratus clouds developed over the south and western parts of the valley, until most of the west ridge was obscured and the south part of the valley was totally socked in. A few stray snowflakes danced in the air around us. Things began to clear up towards the end of the day. Ground wind, mostly from the west, was calm in the morning, becoming stronger in the afternoon with a few gusts strong enough to knock stuff over, then calming down. Ridge winds were the opposite – the air above the ridges was thick with flying snow early in the day. Blowing snow was barely detectable mid-afternoon, but it built up again in the late afternoon. Ridge winds appeared to come from the south-southwest. Upper winds were moderate from the west most of the day.
Raptor Observations:
The first migrants were detected shortly before noon, popping up over the east ridge in various place and kiting up high, going straight over our heads and disappearing over Skogan Pass, not going anywhere near Mt Lorette. The Golden Eagles that took this route were travelling as fast as I’ve ever seen an eagle move. They must have had quite a tail wind. As the day wore on, the ridge winds died down a bit, and subsequent eagles were seen taking a more traditional route along the east ridge and over to Mt Lorette, but still quite high and fast. Only three Golden Eagles were seen on the west side of the valley. Of those, only one continued on the west side; the other two moved over towards the east side, then took an abrupt left turn towards Mt Lorette and then off to the northwest. The total was 36 Golden Eagles (32a, 4u), and 2 Bald Eagles (1a, 1j). The juvenile Bald Eagle delighted us by flying low over the river, giving us good looks at its plumage. There was only one eagle that escaped fast enough to avoid identification.
One of the first Bald Eagles was deemed a non-migrant. The last Golden Eagle of the day did a few display dives over Patrick, and then headed in a northwest direction, making us wonder whether it was one of the resident pair, or if it was moving on. When it got to Hummingbird Plume, it did an abrupt turn towards Mt Lorette and we were leaning towards calling it a migrant. It flew into the face of Lorette very low, then soared around until it was at peak height, at which point it headed directly towards Nakiska – one of the residents has returned!
Non-raptor Observations:
There were enough eagles flying by very high that we didn’t have much time to look for other birds lower down. One skein of nine Canada Geese flew north along the east side of the valley. Other than those, there was one Black-billed Magpie, about seven Common Ravens, one Black-capped Chickadee, and one Mountain Chickadee.

We only had one visitor today, a very friendly and inquisitive girl from Quebec.
Weather:
A fresh foot of snow had fallen overnight and tree branches snapped, no longer able to bear the weight as we slowly plowed our way in silence along the trail. White figures with ghoulish faces engulfed the small trees transforming the landscape into a dreamlike movie set. It took the sharp buzz of a Varied Thrush to snap us out of our dreamy Winterland trance. The temperature started out at â4C, gradually creeping up to 0.5 by 15:00 and staying the same until the count finalized. Ground winds averaged between 5 and 12 SSW all day with a few gusts here and there. Ridge winds were moderate and strong from the West forming plumes. It snowed during the first few hours and by 11 the sun was able to spend a bit more time freely shining on us between the cumulous clouds. A snow squall to the South and West was kept at bay throughout most of the day with only a few intrusions.
Raptor Observations:
The eagles flew quite low today, coming in from behind the Fisher range then gliding and flapping along the face of Mt. Patrick and on over to Mt. Lorette. When the winds picked up, they were able to glide and soar above the ridge line. The total migrant count was 8 adult Golden Eagles and 2 adult Bald Eagles. One resident adult Bald eagle flew south along the river and one resident adult Golden Eagle landed to roost on a tree on Mt. Patrick later in the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
1 Varied Thrush, 1 Pileated Woodpecker, 1 Chickadee, 40 Bohemian Waxwings. 7 Ravens, 1 Black-billed Magpie, 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch and 5 White-Tailed Deer.
